REVALGAE in action: science, environmental education and the valorisation of invasive species

On the 28th of May, Luísa Custódio, from the Portuguese REVALGAE team, joined the 8th-grade classes from the Santo Antonio School, Faro, Portugal, for an invasive plant biomass collection activity at Faro Beach, Portugal.

The activity was carried out within the framework of the Eco-Schools programme, with the participation of teachers, volunteers and technicians from APA – Portuguese Environment Agency. It aimed to raise students’ awareness of the impact of invasive species on coastal ecosystems and the importance of their sustainable management.

During the activity, biomass from Acacia saligna, Carpobrotus edulis and Arundo donax was collected. This biomass will now be chemically analysed by the Portuguese REVALGAE team as part of the project’s strategy for the biotechnological valorisation of invasive species.

This initiative highlights how REVALGAE seeks to turn an environmental challenge into an opportunity, connecting scientific research, environmental education, ecosystem conservation and circular bioeconomy.
